“Street Furniture” is the term used for a wide range of sidewalk installations that provide for the safety, support and comfort of transit riders, pedestrians and other users of the sidewalk. The most common and recognizable of these are the bus bench and transit shelter. StreetsLA is expanding and improving the street furniture in the City, with a particular emphasis on supporting expanded use of transit, helping to fulfill the promises of LA’s Green New Deal.

The City extended the Bus Bench Program contract with Insite Street Media, LLC (ISSM) for an additional 5 years, through October 2026. As a part of the extended Program term, ISSM will furnish the City with an additional 750 bus benches. |
Cool Amenities: As part of Mayor Garcetti’s Green New Deal, StreetsLA has begun to add cooling features, trees and more shade at bus stops. Starting in October 2019, Insite Street Media (ISSM) installed the first of 50 experimental shade umbrellas to provide much needed shade throughout the City. In the coming months, ISSM will be pursuing the design and construction of more shade structures with the goal of installing upwards of 300 permanent shade structures over the City’s bus benches this year. |

This program is growing! In 2020 and 2021, StreetsLA will be adding 750 more bus benches across the City, and we’re working to incorporate more shade at these bus stops.

Since 2001, StreetsLA has overseen a program that operates a wide range of street furniture, highlighted by nearly 1,900 bus shelters. Now, we are re-imagining that program to provide more and improved shelter, shade, safety and comfort for transit riders and pedestrians.

Transit Shelter Enhancement Through Art
StreetsLA provides opportunities to enhance transit shelter aesthetics and further community identity through the display or application of artwork. Artwork displayed on the City’s transit shelters should reflect the people, values, history and cultural characteristics of the surrounding community and/or the City of Los Angeles in general. Artwork proposals are considered on a case-by-case basis.
